Updated Prey Journey Progress Guide: Faster Path to Nightmare Mode

The Prey system in World of Warcraft's Midnight expansion (featuring the mysterious Astalor Bloodsworn in Silvermoon's Murder Row) lets players hunt powerful targets across Azeroth while being hunted in return. It's a high-stakes activity with escalating difficulties—Normal, Hard, and the brutal Nightmare Mode.

Reaching Journey Rank 4 in the Preyseeker’s Journey is key, as it unlocks the final story quests from Astalor Bloodsworn and grants access to Nightmare difficulty hunts. These offer the toughest challenges and some of the best rewards, like champion-tier gear.

Blizzard recently responded to player feedback about the grind to Rank 4 feeling too restrictive (especially concerns over slow progress after the initial weekly hunts). A hotfix has now made it significantly easier to hit that milestone and dive into the full Nightmare experience.

Key Changes to Journey Progress (Effective Immediately)

These adjustments apply account-wide and cover all hunt types, including standard selected hunts and the random hunts feature (unlocked at Journey Rank 2).

  • Your first 4 hunts each week (account-wide) — Still award 1000 Journey progress each. This remains the most efficient way to build progress early on.

  • Additional hunts (beyond the first 4 each week):

    • While at Journey Ranks 1–3 → Now award 1000 Journey progress per hunt. → This is the big buff! It means you can keep farming at full speed to push toward Rank 4 without hitting a steep diminishing return.

    • Once you reach Journey Rank 4 and beyond → Additional hunts award only 50 Journey progress each. → The cap kicks in after Rank 4 to balance long-term progression.

In short: Grind hard with extra hunts while you're still in Ranks 1–3 to rocket toward Nightmare unlock. After that, stick mostly to your 4 high-value weekly hunts for steady gains.

Quick Tips for Maximizing Progress

  • Prioritize completing at least 4 hunts per week on each character/account to maximize the 1000-point baseline rewards.

  • Use the random hunt feature (available from Rank 2): Pay Astalor 50 Anguish to get a randomly generated hunt. These often let you pick rewards in various currencies—including extra Anguish—so they're great for sustaining the resource loop.

  • All hunt completions count toward the weekly cap and progress rules—no exceptions.

  • Focus on efficient hunt strategies (e.g., using zone content, traps, and mechanics like "Riposte the Shadow" where applicable) to clear hunts faster while the 1000-point bonus is active for Ranks 1–3.

These tweaks address the main pain point—making Nightmare Mode more accessible without removing the sense of achievement. If you're close to Rank 4, now's the perfect time to push through with extra hunts.
