How Spoils Rewards Work in WoW Ritual Sites – Full Breakdown (Patch 12.0.5 / Midnight)
World of Warcraft’s Patch 12.0.5 (part of the Midnight expansion) introduced Ritual Sites, exciting new instanced activities that blend elements of Delves with customizable challenges, objectives, and high-reward loot. These 1-5 player scenarios take place in rotating locations like Daggerspine Point in Eversong Woods and Broken Throne in Zul’Aman. At the heart of the system is the Spoils score—a performance metric that determines how much reputation, currency, gear, cosmetics, mounts, pets, and housing decor you walk away with.
Popular WoW content creator Moudi recently dropped a quick YouTube Short breaking down exactly how Spoils rewards work in Ritual Sites. The video (titled “How SPOILS Reward Work in RITUAL SITES”) is a concise, no-fluff guide perfect for players jumping into the new content. Here’s a detailed article version with everything explained clearly, including the math, challenge bonuses, and tips.
What Are Spoils?
Spoils represent the total “points” you accumulate by completing objectives inside a Ritual Site—primarily by defeating enemies, clearing named mobs, and finishing the final boss encounter. It’s displayed in real-time in the UI and shown as your final performance score at the end.
A standard “five” (likely referring to a Tier 5 or full clear run) typically nets around 500 base Spoils points.
The more you push difficulty and stack challenges, the higher your Spoils score climbs.
How Spoils Convert to Rewards
Moudi’s video gives the exact conversion rules players need to know:
Reputation / Renown → 1:1 ratio. 500 Spoils = roughly 500 rep with the associated Ritual Sites faction (plus or minus a tiny variance).
Field Accolades (main gearing currency) → Divide Spoils by 10. 500 Spoils = 50 Field Accolades. This currency is used to buy Champion and Hero track gear from vendors like Maren Silverwing.
Voidlight Marl (special currency for cosmetics, mounts, pets, and decor) → Roughly divide Spoils by 3. This is the “War light mall” you hear in the auto-generated transcript—Moudi is referring to Voidlight Marl. It’s the key currency for higher-end rewards from vendors like Sergeant Vornin and Rae’ana.
These conversions happen automatically when you open the Ritual Chest at the end of the run. Higher Spoils = better and more numerous rewards from the chest (Crests, currencies, rare transmogs, etc.).
Challenges = Big Spoils Boosts
One of the coolest parts of Ritual Sites is the Challenges system (unlocked at Tier 3+ difficulty). You can select multiple challenges before starting. Each one makes the site harder but adds a stacking percentage bonus to your total Spoils.
According to Moudi’s Short, here’s how they break down:
+10% – “10 rolls” (likely the Tendrils or basic roll-based challenge)
+15% – Benefit station / intro mob effect
+30% – The special mob that spawns after killing 25 regular mobs
+20% – Challenge that adds bosses with extra abilities
+10% – Mobs that spawn pools on the ground
+15% – More mobs inside the site
+15% – Patrols added inside
+25% – Randomly buffed mobs (15% more damage, but greater spoils)
These percentages stack additively, so stacking several can easily push your final Spoils 100%+ higher than the base amount. That means significantly more Field Accolades, Voidlight Marl, renown, and epic drops.
Important Penalty: Deaths
Don’t die too much! The first 2 deaths are free and don’t reduce your Spoils. After that, every additional death cuts your final Spoils by 5%, up to a maximum penalty of -50%. Play carefully on higher tiers and with tough challenges.
