How to Play the Talebound Demo (Halloween Weekend PTR Guide)

Based on the walkthrough from Moudi’s YouTube Short. Demo available October 30 – November 1, 2026 on the Public Test Realm.

Talebound is a new standalone action-RPG roguelike mode coming with World of Warcraft: Midnight. During this Halloween weekend you can try the demo on the Public Test Realm (PTR). Blizzard has confirmed that no active World of Warcraft subscription is required, though some players still run into login or access issues.

This guide walks you through the most common fix (creating a PTR account) and how to actually enter the Talebound mode once you’re on the PTR.

What You Need

  • A Battle.net account (free to create)
  • The Battle.net desktop app installed
  • Enough free disk space for the PTR client (it’s a separate install from retail)

Step 1: Create a Public Test Realm Account (Recommended Fix)

Even if Blizzard says a subscription isn’t required, many players still need a PTR account to log in cleanly. Here’s the exact process shown in the video:

  1. Go to the official World of Warcraft website and log in with your Battle.net account.
  2. Click your account name in the top-right corner.
  3. Select Account Settings.
  4. On the left side, click Games & Subscriptions.
  5. Scroll down until you find the section titled Starter Edition and Public Test Regions.
  6. Click Create a Public Test Realm Account, then confirm by clicking Create Account.

You can create up to five PTR accounts. Once the account is created, you’re ready to launch the client.

Step 2: Launch the PTR Client

  1. Open the Battle.net desktop app.
  2. Select World of Warcraft (not Classic).
  3. Click the game version dropdown above the Play button and choose the current PTR entry (it will look something like PTR Midnight 12.1.7 or similar).
  4. If the PTR isn’t installed yet, download/update it now. This can take a while, so do it before the weekend if possible.
  5. Click Play.
  6. If you have multiple PTR accounts, choose the one you just created. If you only have one, it will log you in automatically.

Step 3: Enter Talebound

  1. Once you’re on the character screen, pick any realm (it doesn’t matter which one for the demo).
  2. Look for the Game Mode option (usually near the top of the screen).
  3. Select Talebound.
  4. This will take you into the Talebound character creation / UI.

Create your character and choose your race/class. The character and race you pick here is the one you’ll use for the demo session.

What You Can Play in the Demo

  • Introduction: Red Hollow
  • Three Tales: Darkhaven, Greenthistle Wood, and Greywake’s Expedition
  • Three Classes: Slayer, Inquisitor, and Witch
  • Difficulties: Normal, Veteran, and Heroic
  • Playable solo or with friends

All three classes have double jump, dodge, and guard. Combat is more action-oriented than regular WoW.

No Subscription? Read This

Blizzard officially stated that a subscription is not required for the Talebound demo. In the early hours of the test some special free-access realms appeared and were later removed. If you’re still having trouble logging in without a subscription, try the PTR account creation steps above first. If that still doesn’t work, check community comments for any temporary workarounds Blizzard may have added.

Quick Troubleshooting

  • Can’t see the PTR in Battle.net? Create the PTR account via the website steps above, then restart Battle.net.
  • Stuck on login or wrong account? Make sure you’re selecting the correct PTR account in the launcher.
  • Talebound option missing? Confirm you’re on the Midnight 12.1.7 PTR client and that the demo window is active.
  • Still locked out? Double-check that your Battle.net account is in good standing and try creating a second PTR account.
